How to have a Spiritual Holiday
Anything can be spiritual - that’s at the centre of what I like to teach, it’s all about our intention around whatever it might be… whether that’s an ordinary-daily shower then becoming an energetic shower of bright white light, whether it’s our ordinary-run then transforming into something that shifs all our stagnant energy from our blocked chakras… our ability to self-soothe and release is infinite, it’s all about how we ‘charge’ our actions with thought: intentions.
Holidays can be very spiritual experiences as the one thing that helps us be more intentional… is time. On holiday, we have time to ‘be’, we usually have time to plan and decide on whatever it is we are doing that day. So much of our holiday is intentional, which is a very spiritual space to be in. Even when we ‘go with the flow’, we don’t necessarily ‘plan’ but go with whatever suits us in that moment - reading your book all day, spontaneously going to a certain beach bar - this state is our yin and feminine - another spiritual state of being! We’re also very ‘present’ - we’re taking photos, this state is also in our vibration of Gratitude - another spiritual state of being. In short, holidays are naturally spiritual but if we’re looking to turn our spiritual experience up a notch, I’ve written my experiences below
Nature
If you live in a city like me, as soon as you get into nature you’ll feel its healing power. In different enviroments, we’re more likely to notice nature: different trees, flowers, animals…! Being aware of nature puts us in the present. As a fire sign, I find the sea very soothing and love being in the ocean. I think there’s such a powerful lesson from the sea - its strength, unpredictability and how we have to submit to its power. I like to visualise all my worries and stagnant energy being washed away by the sea. On New Year’s Eve, I swam into an almost empty (of people) sea and had a moment of pure submission and gratitude. When we connect to nature, we connect to parts of ourself. Being more spiritual is about seeing more of our lessons in nature and using its power to heal. I say this often in my workshops, we’ve been sold a dream that being spiritual, healthy is expensive and exclusive - but the best ways to soothe and heal are already provided to us (for free) - breath, sleep, nature. We try to overcomplicate our life and its solutions, nature reminds me of the simplicity in what we need and our ability to self-soothe.
Grounding
Similar to nature helping us feel more ‘spiritual’ - it also helps us feel more grounded. Lying on a beach and listening to the waves - we can sync our breath to this and instantly feel ‘connected’ and centred (grounded). I share my grounding techniques in my workshops, but simply being barefoot and connected to sand, sea, earth is a grounding technique. We’re more likely to be connected to our physical body on holiday -applying suncream, aftersun, we’re touching and connecting to our own skin more which is very ‘grounding’. We’re so disconnected from the physical body in modern life - we communicate mainly via our phones, on whatsapp, instagram, emails - we rarely need to use our physical body as much as we had to generations before; we don’t have to ‘make’ clothes, garden, cook from scratch… We also are more likely to see the transition from day to night on holiday - and to watch the sunset - being aware of this transition is very grounding, again we are being very ‘present’ and conscious of the ‘exact’ moment in time.
My Phone…
I left my phone in the taxi on the way to the airport and didn’t get it before until I returned… which was actually a huge blessing in disguise. Obviously if I were travelling alone this wouldn’t be responsible… but not having my phone for a week was a really amazing way to reset my relationship with social media and scrolling. It’s second nature to reach for our phone in any situation… we rarely really just sit and be in the way that we would in the past… Not having a phone made me acutely aware of how much everyone else used theirs and how much I was ‘reaching’ for mine as a habit - forgetting I didn’t have it at all. I felt so much more present being able to really sit in situations without the backdrop of everyone’s instagram story - I find social media incredibly ungrounding - we shouldn’t naturally be digesting all that information / images - and I strongly recommend that if we want to experience a more spiritual holiday - you have clear boundaries with your phone use! The main thing I missed was being able to capture spontaneous photos - so I’ve decided I’m going to just buy a camera haha!
